Breaking Barriers: How Mel Worthing is Redefining Success in Financial Advice blog

March is a month dedicated to celebrating women worldwide, with International Women’s Day highlighting the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women across industries. At Coastal Advice Group, we couldn’t think of a better way to honour this than by putting the spotlight on one of our own superstars—Mel Worthing.

If you ever need a lesson in resilience, determination, and passion, look no further than Mel. A powerhouse at Coastal Advice Group, Mel is on the cusp of an incredible milestone—transitioning from an Adviser Support role to becoming a fully- qualified Financial Adviser. But her story is about so much more than a career change. It’s about smashing industry norms, proving that working mums can have it all, and showing clients that financial advice is about people, not just numbers.

The day Mel found out she had passed her final exams!

From Part-Time Admin to Future Financial Adviser

Mel’s journey into financial planning started at 19 when she took on a part-time administration role. What began as an entry-level job soon turned into a passion. She loved the industry’s ability to transform lives and quickly realised she wanted to play a bigger role.

“I decided to become a planner when I worked with an adviser who obviously wasn’t putting clients first,” Mel says. “I thought, ‘If there are more advisers like me around, we can change the industry for the better.’ That became my mission—to bring real care and compassion into financial planning.”

She worked her way up, balancing work, study, and family life. Now, with years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, and a deep-seated passion for helping people, she’s about to take the next step—officially becoming a Financial Adviser, based in our Erina office on the NSW Central Coast.

Smashing Stereotypes: Women in Finance

The financial advice industry has traditionally been male-dominated, but that never deterred Mel. In fact, it fuelled her even more.

“I want to represent all the women in finance who are here for our clients—not just the numbers,” she says. “I want my clients to know I’m in their corner for the entire journey.”

Her commitment to financial literacy and empowerment extends beyond the office. Through her Instagram page, @growingfinancially_withmelaine, she shares insights, tips, and motivation to help others take control of their financial future.

Balancing Business and Family—A True Supermum

Mel’s achievements don’t stop at the office. She’s also a devoted mum to 12-year-old Violett, a loving wife, and an all-round multitasking expert. Between school runs, supporting her daughter’s sporting ambitions, and ensuring her clients get top-tier advice, Mel somehow finds time to keep everything running smoothly.

“Being a working mum isn’t easy, but I want to show my daughter that you can achieve anything you put your mind to,” she says. “She’s seen me study late at night, work weekends, and still be there for her. I want her to know that no matter what people say, you can do it.”

Clients Come First—Always

Mel’s approach to financial advice is simple: her clients’ goals become her own. Whether it’s helping a family reduce their mortgage, structuring investments to optimise tax benefits, or ensuring someone’s financial future is secure, she puts her heart and soul into every plan.

Recently, she saved a client over $54,000 in tax—money that could now be reinvested into their future. Another time, she helped a family strategically sell investment properties, saving them hundreds of thousands in capital gains tax. But for Mel, it’s not about the numbers—it’s about the people.

“I always say ‘we’ when I collaborate with my clients because I’m on the journey with them,” she says. “My clients and I are a team—it’s not a transactional relationship.”

Why Coastal Advice Group?

With her drive and expertise, Mel could have worked anywhere, but she chose Coastal Advice Group for a reason.

“We’re like a crazy big family here,” she laughs. “The opportunities I’ve been given are above anywhere else. I feel heard, and my work is appreciated. But most importantly, our clients are always the priority.”

Mel has been impressing the Team since Day 1, even taking out the “Rookie of the Year” at our annual Coastal Advice Group Awards in 2022.

What’s Next for Mel?

With her future as a fully-fledged Financial Adviser just around the corner, Mel has big plans. She wants to continue educating, empowering, and supporting Australians on their financial journeys.

“I hope more women feel empowered to enter this industry,” she says. “We need more female advisers who truly listen, understand, and care.”

Her advice to anyone considering investing or seeking financial advice?

“It’s fine to start small—it’s better to just start and be consistent than never start at all. And remember, the things that scare us the most are often the things we should definitely be doing.”
